JIRAU ENERGIA maintains a number of social and environmental programs that ensure the continuous monitoring of wild fauna and flora in the perimeter of the Jirau HPP. We invest in qualitative and quantitative population studies of the species in the region in order to ensure the preservation of biodiversity and the biotic integrity of ecosystems.

Recovery
of degraded Areas

The implementation of Jirau HPP led to interference in the physical environment, with the need to recover the region at the end of construction. The recovery process for the Jirau HPP areas covered the stages of planning, cleaning, recomposition and monitoring of the degraded perimeter aiming at the rehabilitation of its ecological functions, as well as the management and preservation of areas not affected by the construction.

Clean Development Mechanisms (CDM) are one of the flexibilisation instruments created by the Kyoto Protocol to assist the process of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Jirau Energia is certified by the United Nations (UN) for its work on Jirau HPP, considered the world’s largest CDM-registered renewable energy project, where carbon credits are generated by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Since the plant was completed in 2016, about 6 million Certified Emission Reductions are generated each year.

JIRAU ENERGIA received a good evaluation in the Hydroelectric Sustainability Assessment Protocol, a mechanism created by the International Hydropower Association (IHA) to evaluate the sustainability of hydroelectric projects in all phases of implementation and covering several areas such as climate change, corruption, human rights, complaint mechanisms, integrated management of water resources, transparency and other issues related to sustainability the addition of hydroelectric projects.

Also to ensure good practices in our social and environmental processes, we support the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which are present in the actions of our programs.
